Anxiety isn't always a bad thing. People must learn to avoid actual danger. One must face irrational fears in a mature way to feel confident.

Therefore, when you experience an anxiety or a panic attack you may feel the need to withdraw from others or even drink more alcohol than usual. To remedy the problem you'll need counseling, however, you may go through some anxiety in thinking about it.

When experiencing oppressive anxiety, treatment will do wonders for you; you will then be able to eliminate the anxiety so you can begin feeling more secure, confident and independent. But, often people ask, at what point does anxiety become so oppressive that you need to pursue professional help, rather than continue using your everyday coping skills?

I. Symptoms of a panic attack

You may often be embarrassed to show signs of panic or extreme anxiety. However, when you experience one, you know what they are. Signs often include some of the following:

-Feelings of terror
-Panic, crying out ... or even silence
-Excessive sweating
-Trembling in some bodily area(s)
-Abnormally rapid heart beat
-Tingling
-Rapid or difficulty breathing
-A sense of unreality or going crazy
-Vertigo
-Discomfort in the abdomen or throat
-Queasiness
-An impulse to urinate or defecate
-Muscle tension

Note that a number of the symptoms may occur for physical reasons which a consultation with your doctor may point out. Between attacks, or because of only one attack, you may feel symptoms of increased anxiety such as:

-Withdrawal, like a strong, new desire to stay out of grocery stores or shopping areas.
-An unexpected pattern of headaches or backaches
-Nightmares, sleep difficulties, or unexplained depression
-Decreased interest in activities that used to be fun and pleasurable
-Out of the ordinary anger
-Sullenness
-Impaired concentration

Take particular note of any maladaptive changes in behavior.

II. Causes of Your Panic Attacks

Origins and triggers of panic attacks may provide clues as to possible cures. For example, are you fearful of a particular person or situation?

Do you suffer anxiety over the actual loss or potential loss of a loved one or job? Has a lifestyle change such as the arrival of a new baby made you feel depressed or fearful?

Is your schedule too demanding? Are you going to bed regularly at an appropriate time?

III. Treating your panic attacks

First, fostering avoidance behavior in yourself will not help you overcome your irrational fears or panic attacks. Facing your fear is, instead one of the more effective methods of eliminating panic attacks.

An expert counselor can make that much easier to do. He will teach you coping skills like, progressive relaxation, autogenic training and desensitization techniques that will get you quickly over the potholes in the road to cruising on smooth asphalt.

Your therapist can refer you to the best person in your area to prescribe them. However, even though most medications work well, the risk of negative side effects is always there. However, a simpler additional method of controlling your panic attacks might just be your exercise of simple gratitude. If your your attention can be redirected away from anxiety and toward things for which you are truly thankful, the new focus may provide a wonderful way for you to calm your mind.

However, this is most likely to work if you are genuinely grateful for some things rather than merely pretending or merely "acting." However, gratitude should not be used alone without more scientific remedies, such as anxiety elimination counseling, where you learn important anxiety coping skills such as desensitization, certain herbal treatments and even the use of some medications.

Getting treatment for your panic and anxiety depends on individual circumstances, including your willingness to consult a professional, the type of personality you have and the compatibility of your mindset with the use of scientifically applicable treatments. Remember that panic attacks are quite treatable and optimism and perseverance will ultimately pay off.
