From Crystal Lake, IL- Anxiety And Panic Attacks: Things To Know Before Your First Counseling Visit


All forms of anxiety can be extremely frightening, but many individuals have found comfort in the fact that anxiety disorders can be treated more rapidly by an expert who utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), rather than a professional who uses ordinary counseling techniques. But first, let us discuss the disorder itself.

What are Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks can be described as a sudden, intense splurge of overwhelming anxiety and fear. Some people describe it as a terror, which suddenly infuses itself into your body and almost incapacitates it.

During such an attack, the you may experience a racing heart, labored breathing, a feeling of impending doom, dizziness and/or feelings of nausea. In some cases, you may also feel that you are going insane, will pass-out or even die.

If left untreated or, even, if treated by an ordinary therapist, these episodes can result in unending waves of panic and other psychiatric maladies which can make it extremely difficult for you to enjoy day-to-day life. However, therapists or counselors using CBT are becoming more available, and, as with other conditions, the sooner you seek treatment, the better.

In many cases, your episodes of shooting panic will ambush you, striking you from out of the blue, with no warning whatsoever. Often, you will be unable to find a legitimate reason for the onset of these sudden attacks.

In some sufferers, they even occur when they think they are feeling calm, relaxed or even asleep. As with others, you may also experience attacks when you are away from home.

Symptoms of anxiety and panic often present themselves abruptly and can sometimes even last for up to forty minutes. Most typical attacks are fueled by adrenaline and the symptoms will often reach their peak within five to ten minutes.

Symptoms Of A Panic Episode

The main symptoms are:

* Labored breathing

* Heart palpitations (sometimes you may think you are
experiencing a heart attack)

* Extreme perspiration, Nauseous sensations, trembling/dizziness

* Dissociation: A feeling of detachment from your body; and

* A feeling of impending doom, that you will pass-out or, even, that you are dying

You may have found that you have entered a panic attack cycle. which, typically, includes:

* Apprehension, anticipating that a particular situation, activity or place will lead to an attack because it has happened the past;

* Sometimes, the worry or fear that you will experience another attack may actually trigger one; and

* You may have engaged in desperate attempts to escape, or avoid the attack and in so doing, you may have felt idiotic and even blamed yourself for being 'crazy'.

* Unfortunately, merely thinking about triggers that have precipitated an attack in the past can be sufficient to generate those feelings in the present. You may have tried to cope through because you are afraid of feeling the terror again.


If you allow the fear of the next attack to take over, you can develop agoraphobia which means intense anxiety about being away from home. Agoraphobics are terrified of having a panic attack in places where they've occurred before and where they found it difficult to escape or avoid it.

If you are agoraphobic you may have found it very anxiety-provoking to go to supermarkets, concert halls, shopping centers, stadiums and large theaters; they all, at one time or another have probably triggered fear and even terror in you. For this reason, if you have agoraphobia, you have probably chosen to remain at home as much as possible because that is where you feel the safest.
