Turning Anger from a Liability to an Asset

-from Huntley, Algonquin and McHenry, IL-

You may be carrying around psychic wounds from past trauma that you subconsciously manifest in a variety of ways, including rage and depression. In order to heal these wounds, you need to specifically focus on the unrelenting anger living in the background of your mind.

By working on the precipitating traumas over and over, the pain of these insidious wounds will gradually disappear, never to affect you again. This process is known as Anger Resolution Therapy (ART).

Your physical and emotional health operate in similar ways. If your body experiences a severe injury and it is left unattended, odds are that it will get infected.

If left unattended long enough, the injury may worsen and even turn into gangrene, a near fatal condition. However, if you clean the wound thoroughly and allow it to heal completely, all that will remain is a scar with no meaningful damage.

Likewise, when you sustain emotional wounds, they can begin to affect other areas of your life, just like the spreading of an infection. For example, if one does not learn how to deal with abusive people or emotional conflicts appropriately, a cascade of negative effects will likely be triggered. After all, abusiveness and emotional pain are continuing and never-ending realities of everyday life.

When you don’t deal with these painful realities properly, your overall emotional and psychological health becomes at risk. But if you cleanse the emotional wounds and allow them to heal normally, no lasting damage results.

Your traumatic memories become no more than experiences from which you have learned. ART is the process that can generate the necessary learning and the resulting healing.

Unfortunately, if you do not learn to deal with abusive people or emotional pain appropriately, you will start to experience cascading and continuing negative effects because these factors are part of everyone’s daily life. Eventually your overall emotional and psychological health will be at serious risk.

Okay, so you are definitely conscious of being angry and you have had enough of being mistreated or abused. You may be aware of your feelings of anger, but, perhaps, you have not yet started expressing them in a healthy way.

Or, perhaps, you may have a serious temper problem in which your anger seems to have taken control of you, rather than you being in control of it. You may be thinking, "I know what my problems are, I don't need an article to tell me how to get mad in the right way.”

But, remember, ART does not deal exclusively with your present frustrations and obvious problems. Those who have a temper problem, including yourself, are generally those who have had very negative experiences in the past which unconsciously affect them in the present.

Since they have not yet successfully worked through all their emotions about these past events, they walk around with leftover anger from them. They bring these "leftovers" into every new situation they encounter.

Might this be you? If so, the result is that you may be already angry before anything else happens. Then you might find yourself being extremely angry when someone does something that might realistically be only a minor source of irritation.

You might feel the anger of the current situation plus the leftover anger you had inadvertently stored-up about the former situations. Then, in situations where you would normally feel genuine anger, and for good reason, you may impulsively go way beyond that and become explosive, destructive or dysfunctional.

You may find yourself hauling off and slugging or berating a person instead of assertively asking him or her to stop some offending behavior; you may be frequently engaging in threatening angry outbursts that frighten those close to you.

Or, perhaps, you haven't done anything destructive yet, but you feel like you are about to explode and destroy everything in your path. If either of these descriptions fits you, you can learn how to channel your anger and aggressive feelings constructively, rather than destructively.

Over time, through Anger Resolution Therapy (ART), you can work out all your residual feelings of anger so that you have no "leftovers." You will break out of the negative cycle of Anger-Outburst-Guilt-Regret-Shame, then Apology ad infinitum.
